Pg 90 Thumbs-up or Thumbs-down

I read a review on the movie Colombiana.

The person explained how they loved the movie and explained how the acting of Cataleya, the main actress, was so well done. The person gave it a thumbs-up with 4 stars and explains how she was blown away with the story. She explained how it has action, love, and suspense all in one and keeps your eyes glued to the screen.

Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat

In Weston Churchill’s speech, “Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat,” as Prime Minister of Britain, he uses a serious and powerful tone to let his voice be herd.  He wants to people to know what has to be done and lets them know the only choice they have is victory; nothing less then victory will be accepted. Churchill lets them know with a serious tone from the beginning that the nation has to fight this war “to a victorious conclusion.” His powerful words are a big part of the speech. A big part of Winston Churchill’s speech is when he says, “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat.” Showing his people he is giving all he has to defend his country and obtain victory. He stands up and says they will give all they have got, by sea, land and air, and all the strength God has given them. With his powerful voice, he concludes by saying, "come them, let us go forward together with our united strength." 

Rhetorical Situation Activity

• You are making the case for the purchase of a specific model and make of car that will best fit your family's needs and resources. 

Ethos: 

• I would present them with a reasonable car. 
• They would believe what I say base on my knowledge on cars and my interest in them.

Logos: 

• This car is a fuel efficient car that has high millage per gallon. 
• It is a big car to satisfy our big family at an affordable price. 
• It is a safe car for everyone. 
• It is a good car base on different costumer reviews. 

Pathos: 

• This is a car that would be comfortable for the whole family. 
• You will not have to worry about the "buckle up" signs on the side of the highway as their will be room for everyone. 

General Dwight D. Eisenhower

Pathos is an appeal to emotions, values, desires, and hopes. 

As General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe delivers a speech to his soldiers, sailors, and airmen of the Allied Expeditionary force, he uses pathos, emotions and values. He is warning his troops and telling them that their enemies are well trained, well equipped, and battle-hardened. General Eisenhower, is letting his troops know that they will not be accepting failure from them, only victory. The soldiers will have to do their best to win the battle along with their allies. General Eisenhower, is using pathos in his speech in the way he is expressing himself and his desire to win to his soldiers, sailors, and airmen. He is letting them know that he had confidence in their courage, devotion to duty, and skill in battle. General also tells them about all the support they have and how the eyes of they world are watching them. He talks about the bad things that have happened to the Germans, which should make it easier for us to defeat them. He also uses encouraging and positive language. The Generals letter contains many exclamation points expressing his emotions and his encouragements. 

Advertisement: Civil or Manipulative?

I chose this McDonalds commercial because it is deceptive. It is not saying the truth about McDonalds. In the commercial you have LeBron James and Dwight Howard who play for the meal, but in reality you will never see them using fat people in there commercials. They only use people who are in shape but never those who are overweight or obese and in reality the majority of regular fast food customers are overweight. But what do they always tell you about McDonalds or burger king? That they are not good for you and they are full of fat. 

This Iphone commercial is an effective commercial because it is smartly done. In this commercial, they show you all the applications you use in a daily life. It is a way to attract students or parents to make things easier for them to look up. It first does a commercial about the application the mentions the phone. If you pay close attention they never really speak about the phone but instead only of the daily used applications. 

The difference between those two commercials is that the McDonald commercial is showing you two athletes who are eating McDonald's, the problem with that is that they will never show an obese person in their commercials, while that is  exactly what McDonald does to you. As for the Iphone commercial they show you applications that are useful for you in life.
